I wake up. You look at me puzzled. I must have fallen asleep beside You on the bench. I see Your mouth moving, but I can't hear a word. The park is not empty, but silence is around us. You stand up and walk away. I clumsily try to follow. People pass us as we walk down the street, crowded as ever, but no one look at us, and strangely, everyone is heading in the opposite direction. Then something glittering on the floor catches my eye. Gold coins lay there, unnattended, unnoticed. I look around, who could have dropped them?
Suddenly I want to ask someone, somebody, to have permission to pick it up, but no one answers my voice, they are just passing by, indefinitely. Ducking down, I pick up the coins, stand up, and give some of them to You. You couriously rotate the little shiny plates in between your fingers. As I look up, I notice that that we are at the center of the crowd. They slowly back up, step by step, whilst giving blank stares at us. A small empty circle forms in the middle of the thousands of people. I look at You and see the substance of fear in Your eyes. I feel scared, too. What will happen now?
In that instance, the whole street turns under our feet, at first making it dificult to stand, but as it continues, we fall, and begin to slide downwards. With the crowd slowly disappearing, we are all alone. In the distance, a sudden line of white light appears. It begins to broaden, wider, like an opening door, finally making out a rectangle of light in the air. As I realize we are heading toward the door, I have a very bad premonition. I don't really understand it, but words are coming out of my mouth: 'Drop them! Drop the coins!' Just as You drop them, we arrive at the light door, and get blinded by the glow...
The bus is slowly gliding, as silently as a feather passing through the air. There is no engine noise, just an occasional scratching noise. You are sitting beside me. As I look around, there are others around, but I don't recognize any of them. An announcer's voice is coming somewhere from the ceiling. 'Hello, and welcome for those who passed the ordeal. It was just a little test to ensure everyone who gets here deserves it. If you look around you can see it's not an ordinary sight. Please don't be alarmed. That's perfecly normal. We are presently half way between reality and unreality, sometimes passing through the texture of time itself. With these informations in your mind, have a nice trip!'
And with a click, the sound is gone off. Just then, I hear the scraping noise again, its like sliding a heavy cardboard box on concrete. I look outside on the window, to see that the bus is going paralell with a stone wall, and inch by inch, entering the wall. The whole idea of just going through a wall is just frightens me. I want to tell You that I don't feel that it's right, but You are already standing beside the door, curiously eyeing the insides of the wall.
At the other side of the wall, we get off the bus. It glides away. We are standing on a square, granite tiled, all white, it looks very clean. Nearby, there is a construction site, a tower so high that I can't make out it's top, is being built. We are approaching the tower, the builders carrying bucket of cement and water, walk back and forth.
'Stay out of here, it hasn't been finished you know!'
'We should stay back, then.' I hear myself saying, but You already entered the tower. I want to yell after You, but instead, I sneak in, too.
The inside of the tower is mostly empty, besides the stairs, they are going up around the wall, curling up and up, to the darkness. You are already on the first steps, so I quickly follow, although I don't really know where are we going at all. Then we just climb and climb. After a while, the granite stairs are gone, only regular gray stone steps follow. Later on they run out, too. The stair continues with wooden steps. Occasionally squeaks under our feet. I don't want to look down. Instead I look up, and see a bright light at the top of the tower. We must have gone really high! The last five steps are missing, and You are already on the other side, waiting for me to cross the gap. I think about it, and see no way around. I begin climbing the few board fixed to the wall, but just manage to tear one down, and it falls down into the dark depths.
I become paralized, and shout 'I can't go further, I don't want to fall down and die!'
Then I see You, holding out Your hand toward me. For the first time, I hear Your voice, gentle and calm:
'Just relax, we are almost through, just come, take my hand, and you can do anything.'
I try to reach the hand with my right, carefully. Suddenly I feel warmth, and I don't care about falling anymore, just want to reach You. As I reach your palm, and grab your hand, everything gets shattered, the world, the tower, and You, everything is falling apart...
